The Tarwater and Kelley labs invite applications for a Ph.D. position focused on plant-bird interactions, emphasizing bird behavior’s impact on seed dispersal, abiotic factors influencing seed dispersal variation, and resilience in Hawai’i’s novel ecosystem. Successful candidates will be part of the Hawai’i VINE project, contributing to a decade-long investigation of invasive birds’ role in ohau.

You will:

  1. Investigate bird behavior’s role in seed dispersal, abiotic factors, and resilience in Hawai’i’s ecosystem.
  2.  Flexible dissertation focus within the Hawai’i VINE project and new SERDP grant questions.
  3. Data collection in Hawai’i for >4 months yearly, based at the University of Wyoming in Laramie otherwise.
  4. Participation in the WYOBIRD initiative, local outreach, seminars, hands-on experience, and collaborations.
  5.  Present results at conferences, publish in peer-reviewed outlets, and contribute to grant proposals.

Qualifications:

  •  B.S. or M.S. in biology, wildlife ecology, or related field.
  • 2+ years of field experience, including mist-netting and plant identification.
  • Experience with large datasets, R, and manuscript writing.
  •  Encouraging applications from underrepresented students in STEM and international students.
