Umeå University announces a PhD position in Experimental Physics within the Department of Physics. The position is part of the Wallenberg Academy Fellow Grant project focusing on ultrafast optical metamaterials for energy-efficient logic operations and information processing. The PhD position offers an exciting opportunity to engage in research at the forefront of ultrafast science, photonics, and chemistry. The project focuses on studying the nonlinear optical properties and ultrafast electron dynamics in molecular photoswitches coupled to photonic nanostructures. The aim is to understand the physics of molecular polaritons at ultrashort timescales, with implications for applications in quantum computing and optical transistors. The successful candidate will have access to collaborative opportunities with renowned research groups in Europe.
Qualification:
- Applicants must have qualifications equivalent to a completed second-cycle degree, or completed course requirements of at least 240 ECTS credits with at least 60 ECTS credits at the second-cycle level.
- Specific entry requirements for third-cycle studies in experimental physics include completed courses within the field of physics comprising at least 120 credits.
- Fluency in English is mandatory.
- Candidates should have a documented background in one of the following topics: ultrafast and nonlinear optics, condensed matter physics, electromagnetism, or photochemistry.
- Previous experience or knowledge in polaritonic chemistry, nanophotonics, data analysis, finite element/FDTD methods, or programming/coding is considered a merit.
- Willingness to work in an intercultural, international, and diverse group, and the ability to work independently or as part of a team, are fundamental.
