Description
Join the Environmental Metagenomics group at the Research Center One Health Ruhr, part of the University Alliance Ruhr and the Department of Chemistry at the University of Duisburg-Essen. We’re seeking a motivated PhD student for the DFG-funded project “DeepH,” exploring the horizontal evolution of uncultivated archaea in the deep biosphere. This interdisciplinary opportunity involves genomic research, bioinformatics, microscopy, and global research expeditions. We encourage international applicants to contribute to our dynamic team.
The DeepH project focuses on exploring microbial genome organization of archaea in deep subsurface ecosystems worldwide. As a PhD student, you’ll utilize genome-resolved metagenomics and long-read technology, alongside bioinformatics, microscopy, and participation in international research expeditions. You’ll collaborate closely with Prof. Dr. Probst’s team and the lab of Ulrike Endesfelder at the University of Bonn. Additionally, you’ll have opportunities for career development through the Water Graduate School at the University of Duisburg-Essen.
Qualification:
- Master’s degree (or equivalent) in microbiology, microbial ecology, geomicrobiology, genomics, bioinformatics, or related fields.
- Proficient in DNA extraction and (q)PCR.
- Bioinformatics skills are advantageous, particularly in genome-resolved metagenomics, Oxford Nanopore Technologies, and programming (shell, Python, and/or R).
- Fieldwork experience and fluorescence microscopy knowledge are desirable.
- Excellent command of written and spoken English.
- Demonstrated self-initiative, creativity, interpersonal skills, and flexibility.
How to Apply:
Interested candidates should submit their application including a cover letter, curriculum vitae, copies of certificates, and letters of recommendation to Prof. Dr. Probst via mail or email. Please mention the reference number Nr. 178-24 in your application.
