The Doctoral Programme in Engineering Sciences within the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences has strong industrial relevance. Graduates have the ability to refine industrial challenges into scientific research questions and apply scientific methods to create new knowledge. They will have the expertise to pursue challenging careers in the field of engineering sciences. The programme is closely focused on technology covering the following research fields: Automation Science and Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering as well as Mechanical and Production Engineering.

Job description 

We have 5 fully funded doctoral researcher (postgraduate student) positions open to candidates willing to carry out a research project towards a doctoral degree (Dr. Sci. / PhD). The positions are to be funded for three years. Shorter periods can also be considered. The doctoral researchers are supposed to carry out research in one of our research groups in the research fields of Mechanical and Production Engineering or Materials Science and Engineering. Requirements

A necessary requirement is a M.Sc. degree in a relevant field (related to materials science and engineering, or mechanical and production engineering).

Another necessary requirement is a letter of intent (see below) signed by the applicant and his/her responsible supervisor. The potential supervisor must be from the following list of responsible supervisors of the Doctoral Programme in Engineering Sciences of Tampere University.

The candidates are selected based on their researcher potential and the fit of the plan to the strategy of the faculty. The researcher’s potential is demonstrated through previous studies and merits in research work and thesis writing. In particular, the relevant indicators that we examine at the first stage are (1) quality & grade of the M.Sc. thesis, (2) GPA of M.Sc. and B.Sc. studies, (3) scientific publications (if applicable), (4) other academic merits listed in the CV, (5) letter of intent with a motivation statement and a tentative research plan, signed by applicant and responsible supervisor. Good oral and written communication skills and cooperation abilities are necessary factors in the selection procedure.

Please note that before commencing in the position, the selected candidates must also apply for a study right within the doctoral programme, unless they already have one. The selected candidates will be informed about this separate procedure later in 2024.

We offer the successful candidates fully funded positions as Doctoral researchers, commencing in August 2024 or as mutually agreed. The salary will be based on both the job requirements and the employee’s personal performance in accordance with the salary system of Finnish universities. A typical starting salary for Doctoral Researchers is approximately 2500 EUR/month. Our incentive salary system for Doctoral Researchers ensures salary increases based on the progress of the doctoral degree and thesis.
