Job overview

Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Trust is looking for a competent Clerk of Works to join the Capital Planning and Development Department, within Capital, Estates and Facilities, to oversee standards and performance of construction and refurbishment projects.

Ideally suited to an existing Clerk of Works, Construction Site Managers, Building Surveyors and Building Inspectors or equivalent experience in a similar role who could adapt their skills to this challenging role.

Over recent years, the wider team has successfully delivered a wide range of projects including a Paediatric Ward refurbishment, construction of two new Operating Theatres and replacement of CT Scanners and Linear Accelerators, whilst managing a minor works project portfolio of up to 100 live projects in a month. The Clerk of Works will ensure the projects are delivered to the agreed drawings and specification, standards, guidance and legislation.

You will have experience of working as part of a team, ideally in the healthcare construction industry. You will have excellent communication skills, be enthusiastic and ready for the challenge of delivering the Trust’s ambitious capital improvement programme.

Main duties of the job

Reporting to the Engineering Development Manager to deliver a quality control, quality checks and health and safety inspection service ensuring best value in relation to all construction projects within the team programme of works.

Responsible for monitoring, examining and keeping accurate records of works carried out by contractors in properties owned or controlled by Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, ensuring contractors commissioned meet the specified standards.

Works predominantly limited to the Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust campus but there may be a requirement to visit manufacturers to review quality further afield.

Responsible for completing all relevant documents relating to standards of work and resources used by a contractor, bringing to the attention of the appropriate senior managers, issues of importance or potential concern.

Take responsibility for all aspects of health and safety, evaluation of Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS), policies and procedures prior to the commencement and during the delivery of a project.

Monitor quality of work undertaken in relation to the Quality Standards set for a project with an appropriate level of understanding of work procedures and practices underpinned with knowledge and understanding of the construction industry.

Provide a supervisory role and advice to colleagues, contractors, external stakeholders and other Trust staff.

Qualifications

Essential criteria

Qualified to NVQ Level IIII in Construction or other relevant qualifications
A building qualification is desirable however, relevant experience of building construction or refurbishment could be considered
A Health and Safety Professional qualification
Desirable criteria

Degree in Construction
A member of the Institute of Clerks of Works and Construction Inspectorate (ICWCI)
NEBOSH General and/or Construction Certificate (or equivalent qualification)

Extensive Clerk of Works experience preferably in acute hospital environment working in both clinical and non-clinical areas
