Description
Ph.D. Opportunity in Applied Data Science for Livestock Production; We invite talented and enthusiastic candidates to apply for an exciting PhD Research Assistantship at the Department of Animal and Dairy Science, University of Georgia. The successful candidate will develop research projects on Applied Data Science for Livestock Production, with a particular emphasis on integrating high-dimensional data for monitoring health and welfare indicators in dairy cattle.
The lab’s research program centers on combining on-farm sensor data and artificial intelligence (AI) techniques for animal monitoring. The general goal is to create decision-making tools that will support efficient management decisions at the farm level. Additionally, we employ high-throughput phenotyping alongside modern molecular technologies to investigate the genetic basis of novel and hard-to-measure traits.
Students will have the opportunity to work with genomic information and different data measured through on-farm sensor technologies, including cameras, radio-frequency identification systems, acoustic sensors, and automatic milking systems. Graduate students will receive training in data analytics, data mining, and machine learning. We are particularly interested in students with a keen interest in areas such as animal breeding, machine learning, big-data analytics, or predictive analytics. The successful applicant is expected to develop projects using programming languages such as R, Python, or C++. Therefore, previous experience with any of these languages is a bonus.
