Expires on: 07/02/2024

The Department of Languages, Information and Communications at Manchester Metropolitan University is currently recruiting highly motivated graduates to its MA/PgDip Library and Information Management starting in September 2024.

Accredited by the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP) this course is designed to prepare you for a career in the modern information society across all industries. As digital information storage has increased, demand has grown for graduates with the skills needed to manage it. On graduation, you’ll be suited to a career in libraries, the health sector, cultural heritage, research, publishing, and broadcast and media as an information professional. Career routes of recent graduates include librarian, digital heritage specialist, information scientist, records manager and government archivist.

This course provides an overview of all aspects of information management, from understanding information seeking behaviour to information governance, legislative and regulatory compliance, and research methods surrounding the collection and analysis of information. You’ll have the opportunity to put this knowledge into practice with a work placement to gain real-world experience of the sector, prepare for your future career and begin building a valuable network of your own contacts. Academics on the course have strong connections to all sectors of the profession, including libraries, local government and the NHS, and can support you to secure a placement aligned to your career goals.

Core units will equip you with the essential knowledge and skills you’ll need for a career in a variety of sectors, whilst optional units allow you to specialise in an area that interests you. You’ll have the opportunity to study health librarianship, which was devised in conjunction with the NHS Library and Knowledge Services North. This unit includes an extensive guest lecture programme from colleagues in health information professional roles, and will prepare you for a career in delivering healthcare and health improvement using information management.

You can choose to study at PgDip level, or complete a dissertation and be awarded MA. The dissertation will give you the opportunity to study an individual area of information management that interests you, using essential research, analytical, time-management and problem-solving skills. Completing the dissertation will develop your knowledge of the field and strengthen the skills you’ll need as an information researcher in your future career.

There is the option to study this course in one year full time (MA and PgDip), two years part time (MA and PgDip) or three years part time (MA only). Manchester Metropolitan University offers a range of scholarships to help with the cost of studying. For information on scholarships available to international students click here.
