School of Health and Psychological Sciences Doctoral studentships

The School of Health & Psychological Sciences (SHPS) offers a series of doctoral studentships in cutting edge research areas, including topics related to: Applied Vision, Food Policy, Health Services Research, Language and Communication Science, Maternal and Child Health, Midwifery, Nursing, Mental Health, and Psychology.

We are offering seven (7) funded PhD studentships in total, four (4) University funded studentships and three (3) School of Health & Psychological Sciences (SHPS) funded studentships.

University Funded Studentships

These four studentships must address at least one of three cross-cutting themes that SHPS has identified for strategic development and investment:

  • Inequalities in practice
  • Intervention development, testing, and/or implementation
  • Coproduction

Additionally, there must be interdisciplinarity in the supervision team; which may also include supervisors external to City, University of London. The application must also include a Category B supervisor as this is also a development opportunity for staff, please discuss this with your intended principal supervisor.

In addition to the advertised stipend, University funded students will receive £1,500 for research expenses and a full tuition fees waiver (this includes overseas and home students).

School of Health & Psychological Sciences Funded Studentships

The School of Health and Psychological Sciences (SHPS) is also offering three additional PhD studentships. These three studentships are funded by the School itself and are in addition to the four studentships funded centrally by the University.

The topic for these three studentships is open to applicants to decide upon, as long as the topic aligns with the research expertise and interest of the proposed supervisor within SHPS, and that the composition of the research team is consistent with University doctoral regulations.

In addition to the advertised maintenance grant of £20,622 per annum, SHPS funded students will get £1,000 for research expenses and a waver for home tuition fees. Overseas students who are successful will have to meet the difference between the home fee (waived) and the overseas fee.

One of these three School-funded studentships is protected for applicants from a Black, Black British, Caribbean, or African background. Additional eligibility criteria for this studentship includes that the applicant:

  1. is a UK-permanent resident (UK fee-paying student) and
  2. is from the following ethnic groups: Black (this includes Black British African or Black British Caribbean or Black British other or Mixed Black or Black British). Applicants are requested to self-identify in their covering letter.

General requirements

The studentship will be awarded on the basis of outstanding academic achievement and potential to produce cutting edge-research.

Applicants should have:

  • Bachelor’s degree with honours at least a 2:1 (or overseas equivalent) and Master’s degree or equivalent qualification. Qualifications will ideally be in medical or allied health subjects, psychology, or a related field.
  • Experience of research.
  • For applicants whose first language is not English, an IELTS score of at least 7 (with a minimum of 7.0 in writing).

Potential PhD projects and project supervisors

Applicants will submit their own research proposals, providing it aligns with expertise and interests of staff within the School and for the University funded studentships that it aligns with one of the three strategic themes.

Applicants will submit their own proposals, establish contact with SHPS staff and must identify and name appropriate supervisors as part of their application.

Applicants will need to submit a 4-page research proposal plus up to 1 page of references cited in the research proposal, as part of their application.

Applicants can expect to hear the outcome of shortlisting by w/c 11 March 2024.

Shortlisted applicants will be expected to attend an interview or be interviewed on-line during w/c 18 March 2024 and final decisions will be communicated in early April 2024.
