Title: Tax Accountant
Location: Apapa
A downstream oil and gas company is currently in need of a Tax accountant / Inter-Company Account Analyst is responsible for handling all tax related matters; tax planning; liaising with the tax consultants on issues bordering on tax queries from the tax authorities; ensuring that every unit complies with the tax policies; advising management on the tax implications of business decisions and strategies and providing expert guidance on tax-related matters. The job holder will also be responsible for the maintenance and reconciliation of various intercompany accounts and works with all entities to ensure that intercompany transactions are recorded and reconciled in a timely manner and according to established financial procedures and guidelines.

Responsibilities

  • Compute and make monthly journal entries on the ERP to provide for tax liabilities owed/chargeable according to prescribed rates, laws, and regulations.
  • Ensure adequacy of financial tax provisions
  • Follow up with Treasury, verify and book monthly interest income after accounting for withholding tax.
  • Secure WHT certificates for offset/recovery against income tax obligations within the financial year and before year-end tax returns for the period are filed with the tax authorities
  • Prepare and file periodic federal, state, or local tax returns (- PAYE, WHT, Corporation tax, ITF, etc) as required, by due dates to avoid penalties
  • Investigate and rectify process errors resulting in incorrect tax filings
  • Provide information and coordinate tax consultants engaged in the preparation and filing of annual tax returns.
  • Undertake tax planning. Develop strategies to defer, minimize the company’s tax liability within the confines of the laws.
  • Advise management on the tax impact of corporate strategies and business activities/operations, and the impact of new laws on tax liabilities.
  • Advice and ensure that the company complies with periodic tax payment, information reporting, and other statutory and regulatory tax requirements
  • Coordinate audits by various taxation authorities – IFRS, LIRS, ITF, etc and negotiate with tax authorities over tax payment issues.
  • Ensure all departments comply with all relevant tax laws: PAYE, VAT, WHT, Capital gains tax
  • Ensure reconciliation of all tax account, VAT, WHT, VAT output tax, VAT input tax and withholding tax on customers’ accounts.
  • Review such accounts monthly to ensure all postings to the general ledger are accurate.
  • Serve as the company’s principal representative to tax and related regulatory authorities
  • Respond to all tax queries from statutory organizations & tax regulatory bodies.
  • Represent the company along with the tax consultants on issues of tax
  • Represent the company on all tax / statutory deduction matters
  • Daily process intercompany transactions to ensure that company books are up-to-date
  • Receive and verify intercompany invoices before booking.
  • Verify transaction documents for completeness and compliance with statutory and other requirements
  • Investigate and resolve intercompany collection issues, escalate where required

Requirements

  • Minimum of 4 years’ experience as a tax accountant
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or related field is required
  • Professional qualification in Accounting or Tax e.g., ACA, ACCA, ACTI , CITN is mandatory
  • MBA or Master’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business or related field is an advantage
  • Business Acumen
  • Sound written and oral communication skills
  • Analytical Skills
