The UK Charity Worker visa is a Temporary Work visa designed for individuals seeking to enter the UK for unpaid voluntary work with a registered charity. This visa category allows individuals to contribute to the charitable sector while experiencing life in the UK.
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for the UK Charity Worker visa, applicants must:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Possess a certificate of sponsorship reference number from a recognized UK charity
- Demonstrate sufficient funds to support themselves in the UK (typically £1,270)

Application Process
Applicants can submit their applications up to three months before their intended start date in the UK. The application fee is £298, and an additional healthcare surcharge of £1,035 per year is required. Decisions are typically made within three weeks for applications outside the UK and eight weeks for applications inside the UK.
Duration and Conditions
Successful applicants can stay in the UK for up to 12 months or the duration specified on their certificate of sponsorship plus 14 days, whichever is shorter. They can enter the UK up to 14 days before their job’s start date.
Permitted Activities
UK Charity Worker visa holders can:
- Study (some courses require an Academic Technology Approval Scheme certificate)
- Work for their sponsor in the specified job
- Take on a second job in the same sector at the same level for up to 20 hours per week
- Bring eligible partner and children with them
Restrictions
Visa holders cannot:
- Receive payment for work
- Take a permanent job
- Access public funds
Dependent Requirements
Partners and children accompanying the visa holder must demonstrate their ability to financially support themselves during their stay. Employers may also choose to sponsor dependents’ maintenance.
Employer-Sponsored Maintenance
If an employer chooses to sponsor maintenance, the certificate of sponsorship must confirm this arrangement. The employer must complete the “sponsor certifies maintenance” section, located under “Additional data” on the certificate.
