Description

Details

SAMBa supports multidisciplinary mathematical PhD research, often in collaboration with external partners. We host a diverse cohort of researchers in an inclusive environment who explore mathematical modelling, inspired by real world phenomena, both in abstraction and incorporating data. This research spectrum includes rapidly developing areas of mathematical sciences including, machine learning, uncertainty quantification, optimisation, high-dimensional statistics and numerical stochastic modelling.

Postgraduate researchers undertake a four-year integrated programme of research in a world-class environment with opportunities to work flexibly across disciplines. They are trained to become fearless in formulating large-scale challenges in the language of statistical applied mathematics and become leading problem solvers.

Requirements

Successful applicants normally hold, or expect to receive, both:

  •  A first or upper second class honours degree or equivalent in mathematics, or with substantial mathematical content
  • Research or professional experience (e.g. Masters’ project, a degree with placement year, work experience in a graduate role)

Although it is not a strict requirement, most applicants will have completed a master’s-level qualification in a mathematical subject. Contact the SAMBa team at samba@bath.ac.uk if you are unsure about your eligibility and would like to discuss your potential application.

Application

To find out if your application is likely to result in an interview, and to speed up the process, please send an expression of interest to the Centre Coordinator, Lou Adkin,  by emailing: samba@bath.ac.uk.

Your expression of interest should include:

• a short statement (250 words) explaining your motivation for applying to SAMBa

• a 2-page CV which includes your academic and work experience, your nationality and country of residence (for the past three years, not including full-time education)

• scans of your academic transcript(s)

• whether you are interested in any of the industry co-designed projects outlined on the Programme page

• information on where you heard about SAMBa
