Join the Institute of Energy and Climate Research – Energy Systems Engineering (IEK-10) in the development of cutting-edge models and algorithms for simulating and optimizing decentralized, integrated energy systems. This Ph.D. position focuses on the modelling of power grids for high-performance computing simulation, addressing the challenges posed by the increasing share of renewable energies and the evolving dynamics of energy networks and markets.

The successful candidate will contribute to the development of power grid models capable of analyzing the interaction of energy networks (electricity, gas, heat) and markets at high resolution. Research areas include modelling and analysis of power grids at various scales, examining the characteristics of current and future energy systems, and assessing the impact of flexibility options, PtX technologies, and industrial processes. The candidate will also participate in the development of a multi-physical grid simulation tool utilizing the parallel infrastructures of supercomputers.

Eligibility 

  • Excellent Master’s degree in electrical engineering or a comparable field.
  • Proficiency in programming with Python and C++.
  •  Fluent in written and spoken English and/or German.
  •  Strong teamwork and cooperative skills.
  • Independent and analytical work style.
