  • Description:I’m currently inviting applications for fully-funded PhD studentships at the School of Computing and Information Sciences (SCIS), Singapore Management University (SMU). Primary responsibilities include performing cutting-edge Machine Learning research in collaboration with me (Antoine Ledent) and other faculty members.  SMU is young university with a very fast-growing reputation. It is currently ranked No. 41 globally (No. 16 in Asia) in the broad AI category and No. 85 globally (No. 15 in Asia) in the overall Computer Science subject according to recent 10 years of top-conference publications (CSRankings, September 2023).  The funding covers at least four years with the possibility to extend to 5 years by performing teaching duties. Strong candidates may be considered for the Presidential Scholarship, which comes with a highly attractive stipend. Possible topics include various approaches to Recommender SystemsStatistical Learning Theory, or Deep Learning topics. There are available theoretical projects on the learning theory of deep neural network, as well as applied projects on robust, interpretable or multi-modal recommendation systems. The main requirement is a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer ScienceMathematics, Physics, or a related discipline from a reputable institution with decent grades. There are two ideal candidate types, depending on the topic desired. Candidates with a strong mathematical background (e.g., fresh graduates of a mathematics undergraduate programme) can expect to start working on publishable topics in learning theory soon after admittance. The ideal candidate in this category would have a very strong command of basic probabilitylinear algebra and statistics, excellent general mathematical ability, some knowledge of machine learning, and willingness to learn coding. The ideal candidate from a computer science background should have strong coding experience, including proficiency in Python and Pytorch/tensorflow programming, and experience running at least one machine learning project from start to finish. Such candidates can work on more hands-on recommender systems or deep learning applications.TO APPLY: Candidates should send their application by email to aledent@smu.edu.sg.
