Description
The Department of Life Sciences at the University of Coimbra is offering a fully funded PhD position in the EU Horizon 2030 project “REDUCE” on reducing bycatch of threatened megafauna in the East Central Atlantic. The selected candidate will work at the company DataFish and be enrolled at the University of Coimbra, contributing to various aspects of the project, including electronic monitoring systems optimization, machine learning model-assisted tagging of bycatch events, and deep learning model development for species detection and classification.
The PhD position is part of the EU Horizon 2030 project “REDUCE” and focuses on optimizing electronic monitoring systems to reduce bycatch of threatened megafauna in the East Central Atlantic. The selected candidate will be involved in various research activities, including database optimization, machine learning model development, and comparative analysis of deep learning models.
Eligibility:
- Bachelor’s and/or Master’s Degree in Biology, Environmental Sciences, Computer Science, Informatics, Mathematics, or related fields.
- Familiarity with R, Python, Matlab, or related programming languages.
- Ability to learn AI frameworks such as TensorFlow, Keras, or PyTorch.
- Strong commitment to personal development and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency in English (B2 level).
